Whitney Houston kicks off her ‘Nothing But Love’ world tour in Korea…

Whitney performs ‘I Will Always Love You’ on Feb 6th in Seoul, Korea

Last night, legendary diva Whitney Houston kickstarted her ‘Nothing But Love’ world tour at the Olympic Park Gymnasium in southern Seoul, Korea. On my old blog, some of you would remember how I critically deep fried Whitney’s performances on both GMA and the X Factor last year. She was a nervous wreck who had lost her golden vocal abilities. On top of that, Whit barely put her mouth to the mic, and left all the complex runs and adlibs to her backing singers. After her X Factor performance I recall saying that Whitney looked cracked out (although she was probably just a tad bit tipsy). Then, to validate my conclusion even further, her brief interview with Dermott was like watching a deer in headlights.
.
I DO eat my words when I said that the 47-year-old had lost her prime. If last night’s concert was anything to go by, remnants of Whits old voice was seeping through like a ray of sunlight beaming through a semi-curtained window. Her performance of 92′ worldwide smash ‘I Will Always Love You’ was not a very euphonious vocal delivery but the voice was making a comeback on songs such as ‘Missing You’, ‘Exhale’, ‘I Look To You’ and ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength’.
.
The amount of perspiration she gave showed that although Whitney’s belting was not as effortless as it was in the early days, her upper register was still rich and powerful. I was particularly impressed with her runs and adlibs, even if she partially lipsynched and sung to a backing track with some of the songs. I’m not sure if this was done due to Whitney being declared ill. Whitney insisted that during the latter half of the concert, she was not in the best of physical shape due to her cold.
.
I loved her performances of ‘Missin’ You’ and ‘I Look to You’ where she paid tribute to her old friend, the late great Michael Jackson. She had mentioned that two of her dancers had been part of the late King of Pop’s dance troupe. She also spoke of the tragedy in Haiti and requested a moment of silence for the victims. Overall, the crowd remained upbeat and full of cheer as she sung her way through a set of 20 songs. I’ve posted a couple of performances after the jump. Enjoy.

  1. Her voice is indeed gone! She “talk sings” rather than singing. She was the best voice in the world and no one to this day could match her early vocals.

  2. Alright Whitney..she had some real cute moments in the performances lol..but she also had some HAM moments but its ok..thats momma whit on stage lol

  3. Thanks Toya for posting an array of clips of Whitney and for referencing your prior posts. I think Whitney is drug free, she also seems deeply spiritual and in a different space.

@dee: I can see that you are not familiar with Whitney’s live singing because if you were, you would know that ‘talk singing ‘ has been her style for decades- reference any live greatest love of all clip.

I see improvements. sure she is not back to bodyguard, she will never be, but compared to where she was 3years ago, praise God, the voice is being mended.

Missing you,I didn’t know my own strength, love medly were very good. Whitney didn’t lipsync 95% of the concert. She sang to the backing tracks of For the Lovers and Nothin but Love and you can clearly hear her voice over it. Loved her little dance steps and her energy on stage. She is obviously trying and I commend her.

Toya: Roxanna floyd- her long time makeup artist died last week. She dedicated that song to Michael Jackson and Roxanna. She was also makeup artist to queen Latifah, Monica, Sherri Shepherd etc. Whitney cried for her.

  4. Wow! Whitney looks great! I’m surprised and she sounded decent in most of the clips. lol at her trying to get her dance on , that was too cute.

Get it auntie Whit. she just needs to continue singing, her tour looks decent and kudos for the michael jackson dancers. That’s hot!

  5. Talk singing is better than lipsynching every damn song like some singers who shall remain nameless. At least she still hitting them beautiful falsettos. That’s worth the money right there. Listen to that missing you clip.

  6. i´m sorry ya´ll i really love whitney but i really wouldnt pay for this…
thats all i can say about it

  7. I would pay to see her. she looks great and most of the clips are stellar. The missing you thing touched me and the love medley was different and heartfelt.

I see her putting some effort with staging and dancers. By the time she gets here, her tour will be on point.

go head whitney, continue improving and damn, i admit, it’s hard not to take your eyes of her.

  8. Watching these videos allowed me to have a big sigh of relief. I was worried she would be a mess on this tour. But her voice is on the mend and her stage presence is as great as always. Her voice will be even better later in the tour as her chords get used to singing again. I really hope she announces some US dates…arenas or theaters, I don’t care, I just need to see this woman live

  9. I Love it!! Sell out ARENAS!! Go Whitney!

    Stay mad yall!

  10. not bad whit. I am surprised that she can still hit her falsetto/head voice. She did it in exhale and missing you. I have to laugh at her dancing but not bad, at least she’s not stiff standing up just singing. That use to bother me.

I think if she continues to sing with no pressure, she’ll continue to get better. I hope she brings her tour here cause I like what i see and hear so far.

  11. WOW. Whitney sounds and looks great! She working it too. Love her little cute dance moves. Let’s see Mariah get down like that? Hell to the nah! Whitney got stage presence for DAYS. Love it!!!!

  12. I listened to the first 3 words of Step By Step that was enough :(

  13. @Mileka: that’s not the strongest performance here.

Listen to ‘missing you’ and the ‘love medley’ or even strenght or exhale. All 4 of those especially missing you and the love medley showcases her power vocals.

I like what i hear and i’m not really a fan but Missing You touched me.

  14. Yeah, the Step by Step is probably the worse performance but she took me by surpise on Missin’ You and the medley.

    @ shanique, ur welcome.

Whitney, whitney, where were these performances on US tv, these international performances are kick ass!

  16. The 2nd night of her concert tour in Korea (07/02/10) was a lot better in my opinion! She’s slowly getting her old voice back…mark my words! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TTgKfUzeZk

  17. Shes come along way, but theres still alot of room for improvements.

  18. They’ll never be another Whitney and I’m glad she’s back on the stage and even if the “voice” isn’t the same as the past, she can still out sing 98 % of today’s singers!

  19. @ 3:08 in Missing YOu
    that’s called ‘bending a note’

Go head Nippy! So proud of you. You are ‘The Voice’ and no one can take that title from you. Just think by the time this tour ends, where her voice will be

  20. My goodness, Whitney you are killing me
someone sent me this link of her tributing Michael Jackson singing the way u make me feel and wanna be starting something

Fiyah! she should have been tapped to perform for him. she is really giving him honor in her concerts- every one of them. I’m a huge Mike fan.

    Thanks Whit!

  21. 1 – She’s the best of our time.
2 – Your voice is getting better and better
3 – Yes she’s older now. But in terms of vouice none of these young chicks can be compared with her.
4 – All hail the queen!

  22. @datruth and toya – okay. I clicked on it because it was the first one above the comments, then I noticed the others. Will listen to them tonight.

  23. Living Legend. Respect.

  24. Looking stunning, good set list, not over produced, super vocals.

    Whitneytastic!!!!!!

  25. Go Whitney!!!!!!

  26. I am really impressed with this tour. I saw clips from both shows and it looks VERY promising. Keep doing ya thing Whitney!

  27. This was awful. She can’t sing anymore. If you think this was acceptable in anyway you are being D-E-L-U-S-I-O-N-A-L.

  28. shut up delusional! she’s still got it. i can’ t wait. go to http://www.yourticketmarket.com/Whitney-Houston-Tickets and show your support

  29. Toya, check out any whitney concert and you will see that she always sweats. In fact check out MTV video music awards where she sang the sh*t out of ‘why does it hurt so bad’ dripping tons of sweat.

It’s not the effort, it’s her body. Her tour looks good. I’m glad she is not just standing there singing.
