That vicious ’swaggerjacking’ accusation rears its ugly head yet again. Apparently, Pussycat Doll singer Melody Thornton has accused fellow R&B/pop songstress Ciara of swaggerjacking her look. Melody says via her Twitter that Ciara’s recently surfaced ‘L’Officiel’ photoshoot is the spitting image of her Matthew Rolston photoshoot for the latest Pussycat Dolls album ‘Doll Domination’. According to Melody, Ciara jacked her look. Are you seeing the similarities? Not only is the pose identical but even the outfits are similar. I hear Ciara stans are spitting blood at Melody for speaking her mind, but pictures also paint a thousand words:
What if swaggerjacking suddenly came with legal obligations and we were able to copyright it? What if it were treated in the same context as stealing ideas and concepts from songs, novels and movies? Would Beyonce be allowed to call herself a songwriter after putting her name on songs that were already written? Would Rihanna be allowed to accept praise for her edginess even though it was previously done by Kelis and Fefe Dobson?

When it comes to the musical industry, nothing is ever original. A lot of what we see are images, words and gimmicks that have been done before from a more respected longer serving veteran. Even the greats were inspired by some of their predecessors. Ciara has been accused of swagger jacking just about every big name female singer that made an impact. If swaggerjacking became illegal, Ciara would face a long list of prosecution from the likes of Aaliyah, Janet and Beyonce.

Every year, millions of people are sued for copyright infringement and are prosecuted to the fullest exent, so why should visual/image conceptualisation be any different? Many photoshoots come with lots of interesting concepts and ones that had much thought put into them by the originator. If an act wants to disassociate themselves from all the derivativeness, be inspired, but put your own twist on it. Be creative. Be original. Be innovative.

People are influenced by others all the time and there is nothing wrong with that at all. But by being creative you are also giving something back to your source. And that way, you won’t get a scenario like Melody and Fefe Dobson calling out others for stealing their swagger and ideas or Beyonce and Rihanna being the brunt of those angry accusations.

gurl boo. PCD is not more successful than Ciara. They never had a #1 single or album, the never had a double platinum album, they don’t have a Grammy and only have 4 Top Ten Singles!! Don’t do Ciara ugly. They barely sold 4 million albums WW. Goodies alone sold 5 million.

TBH, I don’t think the pictures are similar enough to be considered “swaggerjacking”. It looks like it was likely accidental. The only real similarity is that both girls are pulling their own hair…not exactly a difficult image to come up with. Otherwise, facial expressions, arm positions, even hairstyle are different. Outfits are similar, but not the same.
